In the internationally best-selling The Bone Season, Paige Mahoney escaped the brutal penal colony of Sheol I, but now her problems have only just begun many of the fugitives are still missing and she is the most wanted person in London. As Scion turns its all-seeing eye on Paige, the mime-lords and mime-queens of the city's gangs are invited to a rare meeting of the Unnatural Assembly. Jaxon Hall and his Seven Seals prepare to take center stage, but there are bitter fault lines running through the clairvoyant community and dark secrets around every corner. Then the Rephaim begin crawling out from the shadows. But where is Warden? Paige must keep moving, from Seven Dials to Grub Street to the secret catacombs of Camden, until the fate of the underworld can be decided. Will Paige know who to trust? The hunt for the dreamwalker is on.

True to its predecessor, The Mime Order (TMO) was a slow read. While we do not get as much information dumps as we did with The Bone Season, TMO's story moves at a sloth's pace.

We pick up right where The Bone Season (TBS) left us so there is no need to guess what happened between where one left off and the other one picked up. The downside? TMO had 501 pages that could have been full of epic battles, adventurous endeavors, lots of Warden/Paige action...but it fell flat. I get that TMO takes place in London while TBS took place at Sheol I but, do we really need 300+ pages of world building to get anywhere?

ALL IN ALL
-Paige is still a bad ass, if not more. Granted, she could have stood up for herself on more than one occasion (take for instance that one time when Hector and his gang jump her in the middle of town and she just stands there) but given the situations she got herself into I wouldn't have faired any better than she did. So...I cannot be so harsh on her for this.

- Warden is still, well, Warden (and they say that women are complicated). Wish we had seen more of him though. He has two scenes with Paige (the two of them alone) and that is about it. Warden and Paige were the reason why I decided to read TMO and I was left wanting more. I need more!

- The new characters were OK but we really don't see much of them. I hope we get to see more of Ivy, Danica, Nick, Eliza, Nell, Jos, Wynn, and the Ranthen in the following books. I want Ivy to become something BIG! She needs to be stronger and an ally to Paige. They could be totally badass together!

-Jaxon is still Jaxon. Well, Jaxon became what Jaxon would be if he had absorbed the powers and ego of his evil twin...does that make sense?

THE ENDING
That is the badass Paige I know she can be! The ending was great...sadly it took only 450 pages to get there!

I know that the series will amount to something big, I can feel it. But... If there is something I cannot deal with when reading is a slow paced story. Yeah, I get that there needs to be character development and world building but it needn't be that slow. Give me some battles in between, make me want to keep reading through the information dump. Make me want more. The Mime Order shouldn't have taken me so long to read!

And if this is any indiction to what the next 5 books will feel like....I don't know if I will be finishing this series at all. And that is very disappointing as I had great hopes for it!

The Mime Order (Audible Audio Edition) Samantha Shannon Alana Kerr Collins Audible Studios for Bloomsbury Books Reviews

I liked this, I am reading all three sequentially at once, and occasionally (it happened in the third book for the first time) I did have to remind myself that Paige is only 19 or, I guess 20 at this point. And things happen that you sort of suspect that won't happen to her in about ten years. Like, was anyone really surprised about Jaxson? Who exactly he was in the whole scheme of things was a little surprising, but more because that sort of seemed like something not planned but, oh, you know what? on the author's part.
Solid 4.5

Shannon's second book of the Bone Season series is an excellent sequel. Not at all formulaic in terms of plot structure. The story has grown in scope while at the same time, focusing on one particular part of the overall book world - the syndicate.

Paige has escaped Sheol I but finds herself the most wanted criminal in London, as well as the target of the Raphiam leader. Warden is no where to be found, leaving her survival riding on Jaxson Hall and his crew, but the relative safety the mime lord can provide comes at a cost -- she cannot reveal what she knows of Scion's connection with the Rephaim or even talk of their existence.

The novel takes the reader deep into the syndicate, revealing it's twisted politics and customs while fleshing out the world of the Voyants. Paige learns more of her abilities, allies with new characters, and must decide where her loyalty lies all complicated by the fact that Paige lives in a world where hiding who you are is standard practice yet she has to take risks if she is to bring to light the horrors of the Raphaim collusion with Scion. The world of this novel is excellently painted for the reader and the characters are, for the most part, well rounded. While not filled with surprising plot twists, the novel still provides plenty of turns and conflict, and ends with enough of a twist to have me wishing the next book were finished already.

The only issue I had with the book was the pacing in the first third - it was uneven and dragged at times. Shannon's world is fascinating and the plot, intriguing. She does an excellent job at describing both the Voyant gifts, and the seedy criminal underworld. It contrasts so well with the world of the Rephaim and Sheol I in the first book. I look forward to seeing more of Scion, and those worlds all interacting.
Finally finished.... 3.5 Scorched Dreamscape Stars

I liked this much better than The Bone Season. There seemed to be a clearer plot line and things move along at a little better pace. But it is still slightly slow in places to the point I almost started skimming and there is a ton of world building still happening that might have got a little bogged down with details.

Paige is growing on me but the majority of the reason I don't totally love this book is her. She is young and growing but for some of this I think she is so naive and makes choices that I clearly see will get others killed later. However by the end of this book I was totally starting to really like her character a lot more and maybe she is actually learning from the mistakes she made.

Warden is still my favorite character and I find him to possibly be the most interesting character in the book. I really want to know more about him and some of the dynamics of the Rathem. Jaxon is another mystery character that while I hate him, he does fill the page well and I'm not sure just how cruel he could be.

The Ending was fantastic though and I loved the reveal at the end. I had my suspicions but it still had a nice punch to it when it all played out.
