The Old Ways The Paladins Book 3 eBook David Dalglish

A little short for my appetite. It was a disappointment to read the third book of the series in a couple of hours. I had read book one and two in another book of books, and went out and ordered books three and four, thinking I would have three or four days of reading (I work full time, so most of my reading takes place at the meals between/during bites). Maybe I was so engrossed in the story that I glossed over some parts that I should have paid more attention to? I don't know. Book four awaits me, but I just finished reading the end notes about this series by David. Does he imply that this is just a minor offshoot from a larger set of books that I have missed of this universe he has created, if so, I guess I have more research to do and books to find. Can't wait to finish book four, so I can start my research into this new possible set of books to keep me from becoming a couch potato glued to the television, with all its crazy ideas of what everybody else thinks will keep me glues to my chair.

The Old Ways The Paladins Book 3 eBook David Dalglish Reviews

I've come to expect great things from David Dalglish and his work.

It's hard to read anything he's written that isn't great. Sure, some of his characters are about as easy to relate to as your average serial killer, but his protagonists and storylines are always amazing.

With The Old Ways, David has outdone himself.

As anyone who read the previous installment in The Paladins series will know, Jerico and Darius were united as paladins of Ashur. It makes for a very interesting ordeal seeing Darius coming to terms with the change from an all condemning god to an all forgiving god.

As we've all come to expect, Jerico once again goes through hell between the start and end of the book, but as I said, that's to be expected. Anyone who has read any of David's books that Jerico was in has noticed that particular pattern.

One thing I do have to say is that this series is not so much a backstory for Jerico as it first appeared to be. Darius is just as much of a protagonist in this book as Jerico is. I honestly cannot call one of them the protagonist and the other the deuteragonist. They're that close in terms of importance.

I have to say that the main antagonist for this book was by far my favorite antagonist in The Paladins. He reminds me of Velixar, but he is more likeable and is insane in different ways. As a result, I didn't feel the desire for him to die an excrutiating death every time he showed up. That said, he's pretty hard to relate to and is most definitely insane.

Perhaps the best thing about The Old Ways is that it has the best writing of any Dalglish book, and it's longer than the other two "The Paladins" books.

David, I'd like to thank you for coming up with such a great book for us to read and hope to continue to read your work for years to come. And I have to say that your book was a great one to start the year off. It was the first book I read in 2012.
"The Old Ways" is the third in "The Paladin" series by author David Dalglish.

SPOILERS

This tale follows both Paladins (Jerico and Darius) as they continue to try to counter the efforts of the disciples of the dark god, Karak. Those disciples in the main being Luther, Valessa, and the latest bastion of the dark, Cyric. The story culminates with some great confrontations at three sites, Castle of Caves (Arthur's holdout), Blood Tower (Robert' stronghold) and the small town of Willshire.

Impressions...things I liked

The book features some strong character development, made possible through the interaction with others. One of the most significant was Darius, whose conversion from the dark to the light had still left many doubts, not only within himself but also from those he had previous caused grievous injury. The other character that I felt blossomed under author Dalglish's guiding hand was Valessa, who returned as a ghost and whose self-incriminations and loathing tortured her soul (or what was left of it) for the entire book.

I loved the pace as well as the attitude taken on by this third Paladin book...lots of action, but the battles were not the absolute gore-fests of novels past. And by that I mean there seemed to be a deliberate focusing on the emotional content of battle participants as well as the describing the result of a particularly good sword swing and its devastating effects. A real leap of maturity in David Dalglish's style and writing skill.

Really glad to see a shift (or at least a sharing) of focus of the overall story to Darius. Also, one one my major concerns of the two installments prior to this one was that Jerico's tale was always the center of attention, plus his character was almost 'too righteous', a goody-two-shoes if you will. That image seems to have been significantly lessened, to the betterment of the overall novel.

Cover art...stunning...almost has a 3D quality to it.

Maps...of western Dezrel. Beautifully drawn and detailed. Hats off to Ramsey (the artist) and a big thank you to David for listening to a few of his fans...lol

Best segment in the book (obviously a subjective opinion)...Valessa's introduction to the story in chapter two. Gave me goose-bumps!

Conclusion
David Dalglish's best novel to date...bar none.
Consistent quality and writing skill throughout...not a weak area or chapter to be found.
I could barely put this book down.

As it is...5 Stars (more if I could)
