This year I have discovered that superheros are quite super. Trance is an awesome Urban Fantasy that focuses on a group of unlikely heroes known as the Ranger Corps. Our narrator is Teresa aka Trance, who had the ability to hypnotize someone with a single glance. But then all of the superpowers just disappeared. Fifteen years later, she's down on her luck when her powers are randomly reactivated. Except that they're not hers. She now has the grandmother's power to manipulate energy and has no idea why, or how to properly channel it. She heads back to Los Angeles where their headquarters is and meets up with several of the other kids (now grown up) who had their powers ripped away and then given back. Of course, not only the superheros got their powers back. The villains did too, and now a war is brewing.

Trance is super action packed and fast paced. It only covers a week worth of events, but that week was hell for everyone. Teresa has been named leader of their team, since her powers are the strongest. But they might not be enough to stop Specter, the super evil supervillain who's determined to take them all out. His power is the ability to invade someone's mind and control them, and he certainly takes every advantage to use it. I was always on the edge of my seat, wondering who he was going to take over next, since no one was safe. There's also a lot of death in this one, and it was something that Teresa really struggles with since some of them were by her hand.

Being the first of the series, Trance contains a ton of world building. It didn't feel info-dumpy to me, but there is a lot of information to take in. It is set in the nearish future, but there's also some aspects of Alternate History at play. Superpowers weren't something that just developed; they had been around for a long time. The characters have wide ranges of powers from shapeshifters to elementals to manipulation and heightened senses. We also get some insights into the politics and economics of the time, which aren't good, and there's a little bit of medical and science stuff when it comes to the superpowers. The author definitely did a great job with all of this.

I really enjoyed Trance. It had a lot of great characters, an amazing plot, and I found it totally unique. While action dominates, there are some humorous moments and some emotional ones. There is a bit of a romance developing between Trance and one of her team members. They don't get too far in the week covered, especially since they're always on the move or getting injured, but they do find a little bit of alone time to...explore their feelings. It was enough to satisfy this romance junkie, but it certainly wasn't the focus. The ending has a great twist that I didn't see coming at all, and it actually doesn't end on a cliffhanger! The Rangers successfully complete their first mission, and I'm eager to see what's in store for them next.

Trance Kelly Meding 9781451620924 Books Reviews

What's not to love? The first chapter; a ten year old girl named Trance, witnessing a battle of death in war ridden, dilapidated New York city. It's called the Meta War, a battle between superheroes, and nearly all metropolitan American cities are destroyed. You have the bad guys, called Banes, who used their super powers to destroy and conquer. Then you have the good guys, called the Ranger Corps, whose sole mission is to stop the Banes. Ten year old Trance watches the war rage on and is witness to friends dying, along with her grand mother and eventually her father. Shockingly, the world goes black and when Trance wakes up, she realizes every Meta has had their super powers taken away. The government puts her and her remaining friends in separate cities, to grow up in foster care. Fifteen years later, every Meta's super powers reappear. Trance is on the road to meet up with old friends when she realizes the main Bane is out to kill again.

This book could have easily been cheesy and been a total X men knock off; instead it was captivating, sucking you into a post apocalyptic world with fast paced action and wonderful visuals. My only gripe; so many characters are killed off, leaving me on edge and wondering who the hell was going to be snuffed out next. Read the book in less than two days, can't wait for book two.
While this had many elements of my usual UF reads (kickass action, interesting mythology, and some romance), the overall feel was very different.

Trance is much darker than I was expecting. So very tense. I really wasn't sure who would make it, but I wasn't numbed to the prospect of losing anyone either. Good balance and I was left guessing to the end as to who would still be standing.

The world is still recovering from a horrific war between superheroes and supervillains. Teresa, "Trance", is the daughter of the leader of the Rangers - the good guys. She and other young superheroes were trying to get to safety when all of a sudden all metahumans lost their powers. The children were separated and sent to live in foster homes.

Fifteen years later, Teresa is harder, more bitter, and definitely not what you would expect from the daughter of a superhero. All of a sudden, she gets her powers back, and she races to the former Ranger headquarters. She meets up with Gage, "Cipher", and they quickly learn that its not just the good guys who got their powers back. The supervillain Bane is hot on their trail. Teresa also learns that she got back her powers and then some.

They are on a race to find the others before Bane does, need to manage their public persona in a world that sees all metahumans as bad news, and stop Bane once and for all.

Betrayals, finding the truth behind what really happened in the war, adjusting to their new lives complete with the baggage of the past 15 years, and lots of action - oh yeah, there is action here aplenty.

There is a lot going on, and everything speeds by, but I liked it. I'll be reading the next one.
