I hope the author reads these reviews because I would like to thank him. Coming of age stories are common, but this one wasn't. Sure, the usual struggle to "level up" was there, and in this case the opposition was nightmarishly evil, but the main characterizations were so genuine (and at just the right depth for an action story) that I easily slipped into the journey with them. There I discovered that the journey was not just another escapist smackdown but was actually a solid exploration of deep emotional waters, transformational redemption being perhaps the strongest theme... wow! Very intelligently written on so many levels. From well detailed action scenes to evil incarnate to gritty realism (not "Black Company" gritty, but suffering is definitely core to the story)... to hey, this stuff is making me think about what it means to be human.I like writers that make me think and feel, and Peter Flannery did both.

Amazingly told story from the perspective of our protagonist and a few others. Very well written emotions, feelings and battles. Great character progression.
All in all, I looked for a book that could captivate med and not have me waiting years for books in a never ending story, something that happen a bit often these days. This book gave me exactly that, I couldn't put it down and read it whenever I had the chance, took me a few days.
A very good book, I read between 100-150 book each year and this one is so far in my top 3 this year, very happy I stumbled over it, now on my reread list.
I decided to give this book a chance, and I'm glad I did. It has a good story line, a bit predictable at times but never to the point that the outcome was a given. I really appreciate that when I neared the end of the book there wasn't a cliffhanger; however, there is definitely the potential for a second book should the author choose to write one, which I hope he does. I read some of the negative reviews, and I really don't think they're justified. I have some favorite authors who have written dozens of books, most sell for around $20 or more, but I've gone back and read some of their earlier books and they're not all that impressive either. Some had plenty of flaws, too. That's how it is for new authors. Really good books happen over time as the author develops his skills as a story teller and writer. There were no glaring flaws in this book, grammatical or otherwise, and I read the edition which usually has loads of them. Battle Mage, which is Flannery's first fantasy novel, is much better than what I was expecting and all in all was a good read and worth recommending. And hey, did you catch the price? It's only 3.99! Read the sample, like I did, and if you like it buy it. I thought it was worth the price and look forward to reading more from Flannery in the future.
This is the most enjoyable book of this genre I have read. There are so many strong points, from story line to character development, that is it is hard to single any outstanding area. All areas of this book are outstanding. I was so emotionally moved in some of the passages that I had tears in my eyes for 30 minutes while reading the entire passage. To say I was swept into the story and and that the book was hard to put down is an understatement. The book begins with a small set of characters in a small town environment and just like a snowball rolling down a snow covered slope, it builds and builds in the most fascinating way, with heroes, evil monsters, villains and of course, wonderful dragons. The best part of it all is that it is a stand alone book with a satisfying ending.
Battle Mage by Peter Flannery is an epic book that falls into the fantasy genre. The Possessed are coming, and they are destroying and claiming everything in their path. Who are they? They are everyone. A demon from hell has come to this mythical land and it is claiming regions and people as it goes. Anyone who is claimed becomes part of the Possessed army. As it grows larger and larger, more and more peoples fall as it spreads its darkness across the continent. There is hope though. Battle mages possess the strength and necessary skills to deal with the demons and stop them in their path. This would give the remaining armies a chance to deal with the possessed army and end its destructive conquest. The only problem is that battle mages are in short supply. Until Falco comes along. Falco has gone to the city of Wrath to be trained to fight at the elite battle academy. He is learning, but he is weaker than the other students around him and is not progressing as he should. Everyone around him has their doubts about his ability to succeed on the battle field against this terrible enemy. But, if he can overcome the fear inside of him, he just might be able to gain the skills he needs to lead the remaining armies against the possessed and end the demons once and for all.
Battle Mage is a long book, but it is worth the time to get through the story. The narrative is very well crafted and, for such a long story, moves at a very high pace. The characters are interesting and well thought out. Falco is a strong main character, but the only reason he is so strong is because of the power of the characters around him. The author has done a great job of creating a new and interesting setting and bringing it to life in an epic way. Great job. I will be looking for more from Mr. Flannery.
So I have to admit that when I read the description of this book I thought it sounded a little simple and my expectations were low. I downloaded a sample and wasn't totally hooked until the last few pages.
And then....
It took over my life.
What an amazing read.
From the world building to the character development this book was,everything I look for in a great fantasy novel.
I fell in love with it.
I kept looking down and seeing how much of the book was left and tried to pace myself because I didn't want it to end.
I really can't express just how engaging and entertaining it is, but seriously if you are looking for an amazing lose-yourself-in-it kind of book.....
